My dad was an inspiration to me in many ways, but especially in his art. Like him, I started out as a photographer and ended up making assemblage art. He was in a few small shows and art events when I was a kid, but never got the exposure he should have. Hopefully, that's about to change.
B. Rogers Gallery here in Portland will be showing dad's work this September. Brad Rogers is moving his art gallery back to Portland's downtown Pearl District, and his opening show is "Collage and Constructions" by Clovis Crummett!

Exhibition Notes: Clovis Crummett spent most of his life in the Army or in Military service, working as a freelance photographer, US Army photographer and photo officer in the Far East and at various US posts. He retired from military service in 1963. After that he worked as a civilian at Webb Air Force Base near Big Spring, Texas, and for the Naval Photo Center in Washington D.C. before retiring from Government service in the early 1980s. Clovis Crummett was not what you would normally think of as an artist. Mark Crummett recounts his father saying he started making art while stationed in Korea in the late 50's. Many of the early works were primitive paintings, but in an effort to create a more realistic still life, Clovis started putting actual objects on them; if he were painting a wine bottle he would include an actual wine bottle label. It wasn't long before the painting became more three-dimensional with the inclusion of wood and found material. Clovis was always bringing something home that he had found beside the road or pulled from the dumpster at work. Many of Clovis's works are semi-autobiographical, recounting places he lived and jobs he held, covered with souvenirs of a long life in the military and beyond- ticket stubs from air travel, fast food wrappers, postcards, keys, old letters, color swatches and whatever ephemera life handed him.
